Enough of the Pinoy Pride Already!

I do want to commend Sayaka Akimoto's being proud to be half-Filipino and I am endorsing her in this blog, well people ought to like the way they are.  However there is always the problem of the Pinoy pride which I wish to address to Filipino by race readers of this blog who might be stuck in Pinoy pride.  That is, it's a problem of Pinoys with all their, "Oh it's another of our countrymen, Pinoys are truly great."  Well it's nice to have Filipinos talents here and there but Filipinos should NEVER gloat about their being Filipino as the reason why these people succeed.  Let's think about it- the Pinoy pride thing isn't going to help the Philippines a bit!  Plus, this is the first time this blog has me writing something like this because some people I support here are actually half-Filipino or have worked with some Filipinos.  Don't forget Andy Lau's duet with Sharon Cuneta or Jacky Cheung's duet with Regine Velasquez.

I could commend the success of Regine Velasquez having her duet with Jacky Cheung or my favorite of Sharon Cuneta-Pangilinan with one of my favorite actors Andy Lau. However, they didn't succeed at the fact that they are Filipino.  They are hardworking and talented and NOT all Filipinos are talented.  I mean, if a Filipino gets rejected in a singing audition for having a bad voice, IT. IS. NOT. RACISM.  I know there are talented Pinoys but these people won't go anywhere without hard work.  Sadly many Filipinos are deluded about themselves just because one Filipino succeeds, they think that they can ride on him or her or that when they are rightly rejected, it is racism ignorning the fact that the rejects are not exclusively Filipino but rather unqualified people. There are brilliant Filipinos but there are also stupid ones.

After reading about Sayaka Akimoto's bold move of loving the fact she is a half-breed, there's been some meaningful exchange of comments about Pinoy Pride here from comrade UkiyaSeed.  I'll also post it here for meaningful comments from me.  I took a few of them to in order to be displayed:
Joshua Cuyos: It's annoying. As if Pinoys (what lowly Filipinos are called) think they're the most superior race in the world just because someone with Filipino blood makes it big outside of their country (ex. Charice Pempengco, Manny Pacquiao, Arnel Pineda of Journey, apl.de.ap of Black Eyed Peas, Jessica Sanchez, and, a more recent example, Megan Young. And have you noticed none of them are in fields for intellectual people like the scientific field? Oh, and you can even include any random Filipino who became famous 'cuz of, say, a Youtube video of them singing.). They become like parasites; instead of getting their own success, they stick to the success of others as if they exerted effort in attaining the success of that individual. For Sayaka's part, though, I commend her for her achievement. It's her achievement and hers alone, not by a bunch of moochers.
Asayf replies to Joshua Cuyos: You're a Filipino? Your reasoning is probably one of the reasons why the country is... yeah.  That's too much of a generalization. You seemingly claim your statements as universal truth that can apply to every Filipino (or Pinoy as you would say). I just can't see why it is wrong to be proud of your countrymen's achievements. I'm pretty sure Sayaka would be happy to see Filipinos being proud of her too, instead of being... ignored.
Joshua Cuyos: While I agree with you that there is nothing wrong with being proud of a fellow countryman's achievements, what makes it annoying in the Philippine case is that Pinoys keep on bragging about the achievements of their own countrymen as if it's their own. What the hell is that? Stealing other's achievements? Sounds like plagiarism or copyright infringement to me... :P  Dig deeper, and you'll see... And again, I commend Sayaka for her achievements so far. But unlike those Pinoy Pridists that I despise, I won't say "Proud to be Pinoy" and the like 'cuz it sounds like ultranationalism to me. I won't trap myself in the same delusion that they are in (and speaking of delusions, I'd rather be in the Grand Delusion. :P). And it's also because it's her achievement and hers alone.

Pretty much, I really commend Joshua Cuyos a Filipino for standing up against the Pinoy Pride syndrome.  I would have my salutations to great Filipinos like Lea Salonga, Christian Bautista and Regine Velasquez but some Filipinos are really what I'd call wasted or wasting themselves.  One might consider that Rhodissa Montemayor while she appeared in Power Rangers Operation Overdrive, that was her and not the whole Filipino people!  You might consider that it's prevalent in the Philippines to have Filipinos who are useless as every other useless person outside their own race.  For one, in fact just think of it that the situation might be similar to Americans gloating about the success of their fellow American and riding on him or the Chinese people will say, "Proud to be Chinese." because of the success of Lang Lang and Jackie Chan.  That's just wrong, plain wrong.  In fact, every person's success or failure is his or her very own and not attributed to one's race.  There are successful Filipinos, Chinese, Americans, Spanish, etc. and it has nothing to do with race!

In fact, it's very annoying to encounter the Philippines is also known for having people who do things at the last minute and the country is not disaster-prepared, full of people who want respect but don't even respect others, being habitually late, love for things praning or even make heroism out of bad gestures (Ex. Somebody even said that Atty. Vitaliano Aguirre should have not apologized to Miriam Defensor Santiago for his wrong actions.) or making heroes out of the WRONG PEOPLE (ex. Why in the world should Flor Contemplacion be a heroine?  She was a criminal and that whole film about her was most likely fabricated!) which goes from the people all the way up to its authorities.  Besides, you might want to consider that it's okay to be proud of Filipino achievers but for their countrymen to ride on their successes and think they are so great, is really just wrong, very wrong.  It just got me to face palm after somebody I knew who auditioned for a singing talent who got rejected for having a bad voice said, "Well we Pinoys are all great singers, why can't the judges see that?" and then they go with their overly whining about everything.

  1. Amen to that! It ain't like we're generalising, its just that this overly-bloated ego of theirs only serves to shoot themselves in the foot on the long run, just as what happened to Nazi Germany - they once boasted that their race of "Aryans" are above all else, i.e. in the 1936 Olympics, yet ended up toppling themselves in the end.

    1. It's really annoying if you ask me. I remembered how some Pinoys bragged that they are all better than their fellow Filipino-Chinese because they were Filipino by blood without realizing that some of the things they enjoy like Jollibee are ran by Filipino-Chinese.

Maybe I should mention that I am afraid with what you mentioned about Nazi Germany, a lot of Filipinos may soon topple that bad. I mean some Filipino sport players are failing as well.

  2. "It just got me to face palm after somebody I knew who auditioned for a singing talent who got rejected for having a bad voice said, "Well we Pinoys are all great singers, why can't the judges see that?" and then they go with their overly whining about everything. "

-oh god REALLY? I am a Filipino but ever since I was a child, I've always hated the Philippines and its citizens. A little less now though. Maybe it's because I preferred watching shows that were intellectual, cartoon or foreign shows that influenced me. Or maybe that had helped me from not having the Pinoy pride syndrome. Whenever I hear/see someone say that, inside of me just snap and I get annoyed as heck.

I mean sure it's okay to appreciate that a fellow Filipino across the country became successful that he or she got world famous. But then Pinoys be like, "Proud to be Pinoy!!" "Pinoys are truly great!." "Proof that Filipinos are very talented!" Media talks about it. Pssh. I just boil when I see comments like that in the internet especially. It's frustrating!

They keep saying that, and look at our country, trash, literally, garbage everywhere. Keeps on blaming the government but doesn't really try to do anything helpful in the end. Doesn't try to contribute at least /something/, just something beneficial for a start.

It just makes me really ashamed. I mean, oh did you hear that? A kid (that's not Filipino or half-filipino..or doesn't have a Filipino lineage) just helped cure -this- cancer. And oh do you hear the country saying, boasting to the whole world about their fellow countrymen doing something so great and just how great they are? ... No. They don't. But then whenever something Philippine-related comes up mostly every Filipino will go, "Proud to be Pinoy!" WTH right?

Sure. It's okay to show support and appreciation and love (that would mean your fellow countrymen have your back)--but that's not exactly what Pinoy Pridists (?) do. They just use whoever that person who has Filipino bloodline that got world-famous to benefit the country..and to tell the world how /awesome/ Filipinos are.

I didn't know about the Racism part though. I haven't come across a Filipino complaining about it.

    1. You are right about that. You should really consider the fact that Pinoy pridists are really annoying and are a good reason why the Philippines hardly moves forward!

  3. Yes it's true, they succeed because they worked hard for it and bragging about this "Pinoy Pride" is getting annoying.

  5. It is really freaking annoying. They don't even realize it. If you look online, every time there is a successful or beautiful Asian-looking person (or someone of remote Asian descent), you find a Filipino asking "Are you Filipino?" You don't see any group of Asians consistently doing that. They are always trying to "claim" successful people. They are a super shallow, beauty-pageant crazed country. They would claw anyone's eyes out who doesn't agree that their contestant is beautiful. Funny thing is that these winners are mostly half-White, like the most recent Miss Universe, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

The funny thing is, if they are so proud of being Filipino, then why do their women keep marrying White guys? The truth is, they are ashamed of the way they look and want their kids to look non-Filipino (as in White). They don't care of it is an old, fat, unattractive guy. It is good enough for them to breed with if he is White. Their kids will have the "lighter skin" they can't easily achieve even with their bleaching products. And the "sharp features" that they so long for.

Very few will admit this. But I've known a Filipino guy say the same thing about their women. He told me that they worship White people over there. He is keeping it real. Respect to him. Most other Filipinos will call him a traitor to the Pinoy Pride.
