What It Was Like Listening to Jolin Tsai's Music And Discovering Anita Mui's Music
I remember Jolin Tsai being compared to Britney Spears. My first exposure was to her song "Love Love Love"-- a Mandarin cover of the song "Stop Stop Stop" by Nu Virgos. I wasn't a fan of Britney and didn't like the artist. That's why I prefer to call Jolin the Madonna of Taiwan or Madonna of Asia. Speaking of which, Jolin became popular with F4.
However, an artist from a different country came to mind in 2004. Anita Mui died from cervical cancer on December 30, 2003 -- at only 40 years old! Anita gave her last concert. I ran into somebody with a CD containing Anita's songs. I heard F4 sing Cantonese songs. However, it was Anita who made me appreciate the Cantonese language.
I saw some of Anita Mui's videos of the song "Stand by Me". Sure, the beat has been modified from the OG sung by Ben E. King. Anita provided my favorite version of "Stand by Me". It's easy to see the similarities between Anita and Jolin -- they're similar yet different! Anita and Jolin wore outlandish costumes more often than not. Hearing "Love Love Love" and "Stand by Me" allowed me to appreciate two different songs -- from two different eras. Anita's beat was taken from Maurice White -- who has also joined her in the afterlife.
I usually prefer older music while watching newer shows. I ended up preferring Anita's music over Jolin's music. However, I still enjoy both for their own merits. I like both of their musical styles. They both have their ups and downs.
